Weddings & Events
Moody Beach weddings — the local planning guide.
Permits, oceanfront venues, vacation-rental ceremonies, seasonal timing and vendor tips for weddings and small events along Moody Beach, Wells and Ogunquit.
Permits & the Bell v. Wells rule
Moody Beach's dry sand is privately owned to the mean low-water mark. Any ceremony with chairs, arches, amplified sound, or a real guest count needs a Town of Wells Special Event Permit — file 30+ days ahead.
Best ceremony spots
Wells Beach (public), Drakes Island, Wells Harbor Community Park, and private oceanfront rentals on Ocean Ave. For truly on-Moody ceremonies, work with a host who allows events.
When to get married on the coast
Peak: late June – mid September (books 6–12 months ahead). Locals' favorite: mid-May to mid-June and mid-September to early October — softer light, better rates, empty sand.
Tides matter
Time your ceremony to low or mid-outgoing tide so guests aren't backed against dunes. Our tide widget and NOAA station 8419317 (Wells) give exact times.
Golden hour on Moody
For photos, the light off Moody Beach lands hardest in the last 90 minutes before sunset. Sunrise on the eastern-facing sand is the quiet-elopement alternative.
Small & intimate friendly
Most locals-hosted rentals allow immediate-family ceremonies (typically ≤20 guests). Larger receptions usually move to Ogunquit venues — we can point you at partners.
